Baden-Württemberg ist Standort weltbekannter Automarken 사진 확대 (© Bundesrat/picture-alliance) 독일은 유럽연합(EU) 회원국 중 경제 규모 1위 국가이자 세계에서 미국, 중국, 일본에 이어 네 번째로 큰 경제대국이다. 독일 경제가 우수한 경쟁력과 세계적 네트워크를 갖출 수 있는 것은 탁월한 혁신력과 높은 수출비중 덕분이다. 매출 규모가 큰 자동차와 기계 및 장비 산업, 화학 산업과 의료기술의 경우 매출의 절반 이상이 수출을 통해 창출된다. 2014년에는 독일이 중국과 미국에 이어 세계 3위 수출국가로 등극했다. 독일은 연간 약 800억 유로를 R&D에 투자하고 있다. 현재 독일의 산업계는 무엇보다도 제조기술과 물류의 디지털화를 추진하는 산업 4.0 시대를 향해 나아가고 있다.
